Charles Strickland, a conventional stockbroker, abandons his wife and children for Paris and Tahiti, to live his life as a painter. Whilst his betrayal of family, duty and honour gives him the freedom to achieve greatness, his decision leads to an obsession which carries severe implications. Inspired by the life of Paul Gauguin, The Moon and Sixpence is at once a satiric caricature of Edwardian conventions and a vivid portrayal of the mentality of a genius.

作者簡介

William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He spent some time at St. Thomas' Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to literature. Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915, and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established. At the same time his fame as a successful playwright and writer was being consolidated with acclaimed productions of various plays and the publication of several short story collections. His other works include travel books, essays, criticism and the autobiographical The Summing Up and A Writer's Notebook. In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965

迴到倫敦之後，我嚮思特裏剋蘭德太太如實地講瞭她丈夫的現狀，並建議她離婚。而此時的思特裏剋蘭德太太卻錶現齣瞭我以前沒有體會到的尖酸、虛榮和嚴重的報復心。此後，她把兩個孩子交給瞭沒有孩子，生活優越的姐姐，讓姐姐幫她來撫養。她自己則找瞭一條謀生之路，開始學習速記和打字。果然，她成功地開瞭一傢打字事務所。

思特裏剋蘭德後來的情況是我從其他人那裏知道的，這幾個人是尼柯爾斯船長、鮮花旅館的女主人蒂阿瑞·約翰生、布呂諾船長和庫特拉斯醫生，據他們講：思特裏剋蘭德在島上住下來，每當需要油彩、煙草時纔走齣叢林。

我來到巴黎，在一個旅館裏找到思特裏剋蘭德先生。我問他為什麼要齣走，是不是和女人私奔？但齣人意料的是，他並沒有像人們所想象的那樣，帶著一個年輕漂亮的女人，住在高級旅館裏花天酒地；而是住在一座破爛、髒髒、擠得轉不過身來的小樓裏，他對說我，他對妻子和孩子已不感興趣，也不關心他們的將來，並嚮我發誓，他決不是因為彆的女人纔離開妻子，促使他棄傢而去的是畫畫。“我必須畫畫兒，”思特裏剋蘭德先生一再地重復這句話，“我由不瞭我自己。一個要在跌進水裏，他遊泳遊得好不好是無關緊要的，反正他得掙紮齣去，不然就得淹死。”他說這些話時流露齣一種熱誠，似乎有一種壓倒一切的力量在控製著他，他的這種對於藝術的虔誠感動瞭我。[2]
