School Library Journal Gr 1-6Once again, Heller has taken a part of speech and made its function perfectly and entertainingly clear. This time it's pronounspersonal, possessive, demonstrative, indefinite, reflexive, intensive, interrogative, and relative. From cover to cover, the stylishly drawn, brilliantly colored, double-paged illustrations grab readers and don't let go. The exceptionally fluent, rhythmic text is printed in an unobtrusive font with pronouns highlighted in bright blue. Like Up, Up and Away (1991) and Kites Sail High (1988, both Grosset), Mine, All Mine is at its very best when read aloud. "Demonstrative pronouns make it clear. Those are far. These are near. They point out decisively. This is she and that is he." While younger readers are an obvious audience, be sure to introduce this title and its counterparts to elementary-grade language-arts teachers and their students. Who would have thought pronouns could be such fun?Alicia Eames, New York City Public Schools Horn Having introduced would-be grammarians to the wonders of nouns and collective nouns (Merry-Go-Round, A Cache of Jewels), Heller now presents those stand-ins for the stars-pronouns. Bold, handsome illustrations accompanied by a jaunty, rhymed text demonstrate their importance ("pronouns take the place of nouns...so we don't have to say...Mike said Mike walked Mike's dogs today") with all the panache of a Madison Avenue publicity campaign. Designed with impeccable logic, the book presents various categories of pronouns-personal, possessive, demon-strative, relative, interrogative, indefinite, reflexive, and intensive-in lively vignettes that feature familiar allusions. The climactic encounter between Red Riding Hood and the wolf, for example, offers an opportunity to explore the proper use of who and whom with the tongue-in-cheek solemnity of an academic debate ("Whom is the one to whom something is done, and who is the one who does it. She is the one who was dressed in red to whom the carnivorous grandmother said, 'The better to eat you with, my dear'"). But the point is clear and entertaining-as is the whole book. A helpful summation is appended. Language teachers, rejoice!
