据说小说已经改编成同名电影了。说实话,我有点担心。因为相比魔幻、悬疑的概念,我更愿意把这本书定义于童话。童话的基调是快乐的,而且童话的寓意是希望。这本《霍比特人》原本是托尔金写给孩子的炉边故事,所以它应该是童话。而现代电影偏偏是利用了高科技的手法来追求魔幻和悬疑的视觉感受。这不是不好,只是感觉它不应该属于《霍比特人》。J.K.罗琳坦言自己的《哈利.波特》写到最后依然不能超越托尔金,我想最重要的一个原因就是《哈利.波特》是魔幻小说而不是童话。

更值得注意的是,比尔博的旅途直接连接了《魔戒》和《霍比特人》,在一场看上去充满滑稽又生死一线的赌局中,他从咕噜手中赢得了后者的“宝贝”——看过《魔戒》的人都知道这是什么。这场赌局中比尔博表现得不乏机智,不过还是要说运气在此起到了极大作用。这是托尔金著作中古典思想的另一体现,那些在无意中转折历史的人是命运的使者,天命在不知不觉中降临在他们身上,而最终将以此战胜恶而朝向善。

比尔博一贯的表现几乎无可指责之处,甚至在独身一人面对恶龙斯毛格时也表现出惊人的勇气——并非不知畏惧,而是坚定地朝向自己所畏惧之物,这是亚里士多德所称道过的勇气,是来自古典时代的英雄气概。这种勇气也留给了他的侄子弗罗多,在那场更广为人知的伟大历险中,弗罗多也毅然踏上了通往魔多的道路。
