作者簡介

　　MEHRAN KARDAR is Professor of Physics at MIT, where he has taught and researched in the field of statistical physics for the past 20 years. He received his B.A. at Cambridge, and gained his Ph.D. at MIT. Professor Kardar has held research and visiting positions as a junior Fellow at Harvard,Guggenheim Fellow at Oxford, UCSB, and at Berkeley as a Miller Fellow.

人們通常會說，觀看影視訊息是一個被動接受知識的狀態，讀書則是一個主動的過程。這一點在張首晟那裏有一個新的解釋：讀書，讀的是前人智慧的結晶，本不是件創新的事情，讀書的順序是可以創新的。比如，一本書按照一、二、三、四的順序寫下來，讀者對前三章的內容已經有個大概瞭解，就沒必要再反復讀，可以直接跳到第四章精讀。

張首晟由著“性子”乾的第一件事就是讀書，“狂讀書”。他說話常常被身邊的人形容為“跳躍式”的，“剛說完甲，覺得甲這一段沒啥意思，很有可能就跳到乙去瞭。”不過，瞭解他讀書方法的人對此就見怪不怪瞭。

這種讀書方法得益於那段被“放養”的日子。張首晟讀小學的時間幾乎和“文化大革命”重閤，那時，“書”成瞭精神的奢侈品，他從傢裏閣樓的書櫃“偷”齣這些經典著作。但他讀書並不會“一讀就是半天”或是“熬夜看書”，“我看書沒有任何壓力，完全就是憑興趣”。
