　　首先，語言的第一個普遍特徵就是復雜與精巧的普遍性。語言不會因為社會發展程度的不同而産生齣優劣的區彆。平剋通過對比各種不同的語言得齣結論，最原始的部落中使用的語言與最現代的城市中使用的語言都是一樣的復雜、完善與高效。語言的復雜程度與使用者的身份地位、階級和所受教育水平無關。平剋認為這是懷疑語言不是文化産物，而是人類特殊本能的第一個原因。
