Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales of Norwegian parents. He began writing after a 'monumental bash on the head', sustained as an RAF pilot during WW2. Roald Dahl is one of the most successful and well-known of all children's writers. His books include CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, THE BFG and MATILDA. Roald Dahl died in 1990 at the age of seventy-four.
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.
After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.
Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

著名的作者，搞笑的小说

除了借书， 再有就是买书了。 我去年在王府井的图书大厦里看到一些原版的儿童书籍， 价钱都比较贵， 和原版书籍在美国本土的价格相当。目前国内也引进了大量的原版书籍， 就是全部都翻译成了中文出版， 少数以中英双语的形式出版。 这种做法让我有一点点不解，中国有如此众多的儿童读者群， 完全可以出来大量的优秀儿童作家， 用中文写中国孩子的生活， 写有中国文化特色的作品。为什么翻译别国的作品成了主流。 看看各学校各博客推荐的儿童阅读中文书单， 有几本是原汁原味的中文作品， 80%是翻译的东西。很多翻译原版的东西， 除去故事吸引孩子， 关键是语言上的优美和地道。 被这么一翻译， 韵味尽失。 就像苏博士的书（Dr Seuss), 精彩的地方就是苏博士用有限的儿童词汇写出的最为有趣的儿童语言， 合辙押韵， 用词和句式都极为讲究。 我们出版社非要给人家翻译一下，实在是画蛇添足。

当然每个城市都有图书馆， 可以到那里去询问看看是不是有儿童的英文书籍。 尽管可能会非常的少， 有总比没有强。
