Malcolm Polstead is the kind of boy who notices everything but is not much noticed himself. And so perhaps it was inevitable that he would become a spy...
Malcolm's father runs an inn called the Trout, on the banks of the river Thames, and all of Oxford passes through its doors. Malcolm and his dæmon, Asta, routinely overhear news and gossip, and the occasional scandal, but during a winter of unceasing rain, Malcolm catches wind of something new: intrigue.
He finds a secret message inquiring about a dangerous substance called Dust--and the spy it was intended for finds him.
When she asks Malcolm to keep his eyes open, Malcolm sees suspicious characters everywhere; Lord Asriel, clearly on the run; enforcement agents from the Magisterium; an Egyptian named Coram with warnings just for Malcolm; and a beautiful woman with an evil monkey for a dæmon. All are asking about the same thing: a girl--just a baby--named Lyra.
Lyra is the kind of person who draws people in like magnets. And Malcolm will brave any danger, and make shocking sacrifices, to bring her safely through the storm.

##不敢相信是写黄金罗盘三部曲的作者写出来的，翻了亚马逊的评论，发现跟我想法如出一辙——那些无谓的短暂出现的次要角色，毫无意义，而且没有交代。那个fairy land给lyra哺乳的女王，那个Tilda女王，都是女王出现。Serafina去哪里了？哪些熟悉的人，相关的也就Lyra Mrs.Coulter和Lord Asriel。其他几乎完全不相关了。Dr.Relf出场那么多，最后还是打酱油。Oakley Street也是草草交代。不断地自我重复，发生的事，因为需要向第三人交代，作者自己就summarise一遍。整个后半段都在游船，这个Bonnevile也是死不了。整个停靠过程是在刷地图闯关吗？完全没有connection。真的太差了。疫情在家，读这样一本书，真的沉闷。

评分##听过的最好听的有声故事，从声音到演绎都无可挑剔。最早听的是BBC上Simon Beale的删节版，一下子被迷住了。后来Audible出了全版，没想到Michael Sheen的演绎还要出色。小说相比黄金罗盘系列更深沉些。尤其喜欢这个小男孩，像条清澈的小溪，时而安静沉默，时而活泼灵动，始终敏锐映照人心。而在狂风骤雨中，又汇成一条小河，柔和而坚定地，在大地上描摹出自己的形状，寻找到自己的歌声。

评分##是与暗黑三步曲中Lyra、Will差不多的历险故事，科幻部分比较少，埋了很多伏笔等后面几部揭晓。情节更写实、惊悚，似乎脱离了青少年读物的范畴。可能我太胆小，那只三条腿的demon描写得看得我都吓尿。期待第二本快降价，第三本快写出来。

评分So gripping！完全停不下来。差点以为是青少年读物略过，后来才发现不仅魔幻还很现实。可以当蒸治历史小说看了。
