Hat, ribbon, bird, rose. To the people on the island, a disappeared thing no longer has any meaning. It can be burned in the garden, thrown in the river or handed over to the Memory Police. Soon enough, the island forgets it ever existed.
When a young novelist discovers that her editor is in danger of being taken away by the Memory Police, she desperately wants to save him. For some reason, he doesn’t forget, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for him to hide his memories. Who knows what will vanish next?

评分##日本文学有种很独特的，哀而不伤的悲凉感。故事明明很绝望，却又好像又有希望一样，真真假假，让人想象不到走向。这本书关于记忆的探讨，还是挺引人深思的，美好的事物到底是因为存在在记忆里才美好，还是因为美好事物本身？有些微不足道的事情，从不曾留意，却悄悄牵动着一系列对生活的认知，一花一世界，一叶一菩提，可能就是这个意思吧。不是五星单纯觉得好像还能够再挖深一点，有点不得劲的感觉

评分##這個版本的繙譯很奇妙。祇看英文版會覺文字很流暢，不過與日文版比對會發現很多句子都未譯出。有些地方大概是因為日文表述太囉嗦，不過也有很多地方完全沒有跳過的必要卻還是被譯者略過了。
评分3-/5 My first foray into Ogawa's oeuvre left me with a sour feeling that I didn't fully understand what she is trying to achieve with this novel. The book deals with totalitarianism and the philosophical meaning of human existence, yet the writing is too languid to carry the story with force, not to mention the deeply flawed plotting.
