力既有大小，又有方嚮，力的閤成要遵守平行四邊形定則。在物理學中，像這樣的物理量叫做矢量，力是矢量，我們學過的位移、速度、加速度也是矢量。而長度、質量、時間、溫度、能量、路程等物理量，隻有大小，沒有方嚮，在物理學中叫做標量。

數學物理以研究物理問題為目標的數學理論和數學方法。它探討物理現象的數學模型，即尋求物理現象的數學描述，並對模型已確立的物理問題研究其數學解法，然後根據解答來詮釋和預見物理現象，或者根據物理事實來修正原有模型。“數學物理”，是數學和物理學的交叉領域，指應用特定的數學方法來研究物理學的某些部分。對應的數學方法也叫數學物理方法。包括微分方程、作用量理論等多方麵。
