Oxford University Press (OUP) is the largest university press in the world. 纸的出现，约在西汉时期，史书正式的纪录是公元一○五年。由于纸张具有轻柔及低廉的长处，因而，很快的成为生产图书最主要的材料。纸出现以后，虽然解决了图书生产方面的许多问题，但是生产图书，犹停留在逐字逐本的抄写，既费时又费力，还是欠缺方便。人们遂从长期使用印章和捶拓碑碣文字的经验中，启发了雕版与印刷技术的结合使用，便捷快速的生产图书方法，终于发明。以古法示范造纸过程。

雕版印刷术约在初、盛唐时代出现，由于它是手工业时代生产图书的好方法，因此很快被推广利用，成为五代、两宋以後生产图书的主力。为了使印刷技术更便捷与美观，宋仁宗庆历年间（公元一○四一～一○四八）又有人发明活字排版印刷。而元朝末年，更进步到彩色套印的印刷领域。从此之后，印刷技术不但成熟周全，印刷成品更是鲜丽动人。
