作者简介

Syd Hoff was born and raised in New York City. He studied at the National Academy of Design and sold his first cartoon to The New Yorker when he was eighteen. He eventually became one of the most original and beloved authors and illustrators of children's books. Mr. Hoff wrote more than fifty books for children, including the I Can Read titles Danny and the Dinosaur, Oliver, and Sammy the Seal.

"After a long sea voyage, Oliver the elephant gets off the boat and learns that he doesn't have a job in the circus. He heads out seeking employment first at the zoo and then as a peanut vendor. Neither works out, so he tries being a pet. Finally Oliver heads to the park where he meets a group of kids. After playing awhile, they all contemplate what they would like to do. Oliver, who wants to be a dancing elephant, starts to strut his stuff. He is so good that people don't pay attention to the passing circus parade. Finally Oliver gets the job that he wants and deserves. The text is simple and the illustrations are a delight, but the book is a bit long for kids just starting to read. 大象，英文Elephant，长鼻目，象科。通称象，是现存世界最大的陆生动物，平均每天能消耗75~150千克植物。尽管有一个巨型的胃和19米长的肠子，但是它的消化能力却相当差。它们主要外部特征为柔韧而肌肉发达的长鼻和扇大的耳朵，具缠卷的功能，是象自卫和取食的有力工具。长鼻目仅有象科1科共2属3种，即亚洲象和非洲象以及非洲森林象。亚洲象历史上曾广布于中国长江以南(最远曾达到河南省)的南亚和东南亚地区，喜欢群居，现分布范围已缩小，主产于印度、泰国、柬埔寨、越南等国。中国云南省西双版纳地区也有小的野生种群。非洲象和非洲森林象则广泛分布于整个撒哈拉以南的非洲大陆,喜欢群居。 　　亚洲象肩约2.3-3.5米，体重4～8吨，非洲象肩高3.2-4.2米，体重5-11吨，非洲森林象平均肩高不超过2.6米，体重3.5-5.5吨。象头大，耳大如扇。四肢粗大如圆柱，支持巨大身体，膝关节不能自由屈曲。鼻长几乎与体长相等，呈圆筒状，伸屈自如；鼻孔开口在末端，鼻尖有指状突起，能拣拾细物。上颌具1对发达门齿，终生生长，非洲象门齿可长达3.3米，亚洲象雌性长牙不外露；上、下颌每侧均具 6个颊齿，自前向后依次生长，具高齿冠，结构复杂。每足5趾，但第1.第5趾发育不全。被毛稀疏，体色浅灰褐色。雄象睾丸隐于腹腔内；雌象前腿后有2个乳头，妊娠期长达 600多天（22个月），一般每胎1仔。非洲象长鼻末端有2个指状突起，亚洲象仅具1个；非洲象耳大，体型较大，亚洲象耳小，身体较小，体重较轻。
