William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest playwright the world has seen. He produced an astonishing amount of work; 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and 5 poems. He died on 23rd April 1616, aged 52, and was buried in the Holy Trinity Church, Stratford.

梁实秋是中国现代著名作家、文学批评家、文学翻译家。他1903年1月生于北京,1915年考入清华留美预备校,1923年8月赴美留学,专攻英语和英美文学。1926年夏回国于南京东南大学任教,先后任暨南大学、青岛大学、北京大学、北京师范大学等校外文系教授、系主任。1948年移居香港,1949年到台湾,先后任台湾省立师范大学、台湾师范大学、台湾大学教授、台湾编译馆馆长。1987年11月3日因心脏病病逝于台北。

莎士比亚戏剧的最早中译本,是田汉的《哈孟雷特》,发表在1921年的《少年中国》杂志上。之后,1926年张采真译《如愿》,1930年戴望舒译《麦克倍斯》。然而,在中国翻译莎士比亚的作品最具代表性的人物当属两人:一位是朱生豪,一位是梁实秋。朱生豪从1937年开始翻译莎士比亚作品,至1944年先后译有喜剧、悲剧、杂剧等31种,可惜他英年早逝,有六个历史剧和全部诗歌没有来得及翻译。梁实秋1930年开始着手翻译莎士比亚的戏剧,从1936年商务印书馆首次出版他译的莎士比亚戏剧8种,至1967年最终完成《莎士比亚全集》的翻译并出版,共历时37年。梁实秋是中国独自一人翻译《莎士比亚全集》的第一人。
